The project provided more than 6,000 man-years in Norway and the Norwegian share of the value creation of the project was around 95%.

Njord A has been described as Norway’s largest renovation project. After signing the contract on March 17, 2017, significant upgrades were made to the rig’s hull and deck to extend its 20-year production life.

“A renovation project is never easy, especially at this size and complexity, and on top of having to be done in the midst of a pandemic with a labor shortage and a strict infection control regime. “It makes me even more proud that we have now reached this important milestone. However, I am very proud that we have completed this vast scope of work at our Stord yard without a single serious injury to persons or equipment,” said Sturla Magnus, executive vice president and head of Aker Solutions’ topside and facilities businesses.

The Njord A upgrade was a very local content project in Norway. Engineering was carried out primarily by Aker Solutions’ offices in Bergen, Stavanger, Fornebu and Trondheim. The construction was carried out at the company’s yards in Stord and Verdal. Nearly 400 different suppliers were involved in the project, most of them Norwegians.

“Njord A is now set for several decades of generating energy and creating value for society at large. The project has had significant ripple effects, contributing to a lot of business for both Aker Solutions and a large number of supplier companies who in various ways contributed to the project,” said Magnus.

The Njord A contract was a groundbreaking undertaking in the Norwegian oil and gas industry when it was originally signed in 2017, being the first time a production platform on the Norwegian continental shelf was brought ashore for overhaul and full upgrades. This resulted in the increase in project scope and duration over the life of the project. In 2018, an additional contract was awarded to Aker Solutions to prepare the oil and gas receiving platform for the Fenja field, which resulted in additional fabrication and installation work on the platform. The company has also been tasked with assisting Equinor with offshore tie-in work to prepare it for the start of production in the fourth quarter of 2022.

The Njord A was originally delivered by Aker Solutions in September 1997. The rig deck was fabricated and assembled at the Stord yard, while the hull was built at the Verdal yard. Njord A was the first EPC contract on the Norwegian continental shelf following the implementation of the NORSOK standard in the mid-1990s.

In recent weeks, the rig has traveled to Klosterfjorden, on the west coast of Norway, to carry out various sea trials.

“Sea trials are now complete, and we are on schedule for delivery and towing to the field. Compared to the original version of the rig delivered in 1997, this is quite a different rig that is now ready to be transported to the Field of Njord. Virtually no part of the platform has remained intact and the total deadweight has increased by 23%. Hull improvements have increased the buoyancy of the platform. shape by 24 percent and the payload capacity on the platform deck increased by 31 percent,” said Carl van der Hagen, project manager at Aker Solutions, who was also involved in the construction of the original platform in the 90s.
