After a two-year absence, the Calgary Stampede is holding its wagon tarp auction on April 12.
The auction is a chance for companies and organizations to bid on the sponsorship of racing drivers.
“The partnerships that chuckwagon drivers build through the canvas auction are essential to supporting their teams at the Calgary Stampede and throughout the racing season,” the Calgary Stampede said in a press release Thursday.
“In return, chuckwagon advertisers gain exposure for their brand while having the exclusive opportunity to welcome customers, friends and family to a unique behind-the-scenes experience unique to the Calgary Stampede.”
The auction is widely seen as a barometer of the health of Calgary’s economy, as many of the sponsors who pay to have their companies represented on the cars are key players in the city’s oil and gas industry.
It was canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and in 2021 Stampede officials chose not to hold the wagon races out of concern for the safety of the animals, which had not raced for nearly 21 months and would have limited training time, some disputed pilots claim.
The 2022 Calgary Stampede Canvas Auction will take place from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Big Four Roadhouse in Stampede Park on April 12.
