Kochi: A mother and her child, covered with a blanket, sit on an unexploded bomb in a war zone, probably in Ukraine. In the background, there are smoke coming from the burnt woods due to the bombardments and on the contrary there is a “golden field” of sunflowers in bloom next to it.
The visuals are from one of the paintings that are on display at the ongoing exhibition ‘Invigorating Mindscapes’ at David Hall in Ft. Cochin. Although the painting is titled Despair, its creator Gita Mary Elizabeth, a retired BSNL employee, said her work focuses on the hope of Ukrainians for a peaceful and bright future and that the sunflowers, which have historically represented peace, symbolize their hope.
The exhibition, organized by the Prussian Blue Art Hub and curated by expert painter Suresh TR, features “positive” works by around 34 artists, mostly women. And many artists are not professional painters but doctors, engineers, chartered accountants, teachers, housewives and scientists who paint out of passion. The 64 paintings in the exhibition reflect happiness, hope and a new beginning.
“The exhibition is a confluence of artists’ emotions about what happiness is to them,” said Suresh whose work “A Whiff of the Woods”, which is a large painting, is also part of the exhibits.
An untitled work by Asha Nair, a housewife, shows an elderly man partially wearing a face mask, filling the Chuttuvilak (lamps surrounding the temple) with oil at Ernakulam Shiva Temple. “The temple festival has been affected by the pandemic for the past two years and when I saw the Chuttuvilak light up, I felt like a fresh start,” Nair said.
A painting by Prasanth KP titled “Mattancherry” showcases the beauty and heritage of ancient Mattancherry. Another by Shalini B Menon, shows the happiness of children in school uniform, who go to school after the pandemic. Doyil Joy’s paintings showcase the happiness of dairy and tapioca farmers who have achieved good harvests.
The exhibition, which started on June 4, will be there until Sunday.
