While sifting through a large box of artwork deposited at the Larchmont, NY gallery by what is known in the trade a “picker,” Nelia Moore, art specialist / auctioneer at Clarke auction spotted a beautifully executed but very dirty painting on a panel of a veiled woman. After dusting it off and studying the painting, she spotted the signature Prendergast Paris at the bottom right of the panel.

The quality and style of the small oil led both Mr. Clarke, owner of the auction, and Ms. Moore to believe that they had made a very important discovery, particularly relevant in a time of economic gloom. Although Clarke and Moore both have keen eyes and an instinct for fine art, the painting was sent to the Prendergast Catalog. reasoned expert, Nancy Mowll Mathews, of the Williams College Museum of Art in Massachusetts. Experts at the museum have concluded that this delicate panel painting was by the hand of Prendergast. She was given the title of Woman in the Veil and No. 11a in the recieved catalog.

The painting will be auctioned at Clarke Auction Gallery at 2372 Boston Post Road, Larchmont, NY on Sunday 23 October with a presale estimate of $ 40,000 to $ 60,000. The part will be sold as is to the highest bidder. The auction start time is 2:00 p.m.
