SAN FRANCISCO, March 24, 2022–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Miroculus, Inc., a developer of breakthrough tools for personal lab automation, today announced the official launch of Miro Canvas, a compact and easy-to-use digital microfluidics platform that enables automation on-demand applications of complex next-generation sequencing (NGS) sample preparation protocols.
The Miro Canvas platform offers clear advantages over expensive liquid handling systems that require long setup times to automate protocols and are not suitable for on-demand sequencing and manual preparation. With this platform, users can simplify, automate and miniaturize the preparation of complex NGS libraries, improve library consistency and eliminate the need for robotics. The automation enabled by the platform is well suited for labs that do not run a high volume of sequencing samples and want better control of sample processing.
“We designed the Miro Canvas platform to be a simple, user-friendly system that can easily adapt to the varied and often unpredictable sample processing needs of the low-throughput NGS laboratory,” said Alejandro Tocigl, CEO of Miroculus. “Because Miro Canvas enables on-demand automation rather than requiring the lab to delay sequencing until enough samples are pooled, users can initiate the sequencing process as soon as samples arrive.”
All even the most complex NGS preparation protocols can be digitally coded, fully automated and run on Miro Canvas systems in the same lab or worldwide, with one universal cartridge and without the need for hardware changes between runs . This allows users to reduce protocol times and manual interventions and minimizes the risk of human error interfering with sequencing results.
“We have shown that rapid whole genome sequencing for critically ill infants with suspected genetic disorders leads to better health outcomes and reduced medical costs,” said Stephen Kingsmore, MD, president and CEO. director of the Rady Children’s Institute for Genomic Medicine in San Diego, California. “For these infants, we need to start the sequencing process immediately, regardless of when the samples arrive at our lab. Miro Canvas allows us to start sample preparation immediately, without having to wait for other samples to arrive for sequencing or having specially trained team members available 24 hours a day.”
Because the Miro Canvas automation system maintains the performance of industry-leading sequencing platforms (including short read and long read) and uses very gentle sample handling, the integrity of High molecular weight DNA is supported during the library preparation process. Miro Canvas can also automate exome and other hybrid capture protocols, one of the most labor intensive NGS library preparation protocols. The platform requires limited space, can be installed by the user, requires no programming or configuration, and is priced within reach of most sequencing labs.
“Preparing a PacBio library with the Miro Canvas only requires a few minutes of setup time for the operator. The Miro Canvas does the rest,” said Janet Ziegle, Principal Scientist at PacBio, a leading provider of high-precision sequencing platforms. “It offers labs a way to reduce labor through automation at the scale of individual preparations.”
