Microsoft recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Xbox console, and it was a big party. Infinite haloMultiplayer was launched as a surprise, and many older games were made backward compatible with the Xbox Series X / S and Xbox One, including TimeSplitters 2 and TimeSplitters: Future Perfect.
Microsoft wants to make sure everyone knows about the long legacy of the Xbox and the games that put it on the map today. To this end, he teamed up with Netflix for a promotional stunt related to the Xbox Vault and, of course, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
Promotion takes the form of a raffle that players can enter to win prizes themed on the Xbox and the new Netflix movie Red Notice, which stars Johnson alongside Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds. Johnson plays an FBI profiler hunting art thieves on the show, and it has to do with how players enter the raffle. They must access a virtual version of the Xbox Vault and answer any trivial questions about the items in it. The more they succeed, the more they participate in the draw. Playing the 76 new backward compatible games for Xbox can help.
The prices in question are varied and at the very least interesting. At the bottom of the scale, there are 1,000 collectible cards for Red Notice that come with limited Xbox Game Pass Ultimate codes, and just above there are 20 Red Notice-Xbox Series X themed consoles. Then there are three Cleopatra Eggs inspired by a prop from the show and, finally, the grand prize: an oil painting of the Rock featuring the original Xbox. It was, after all, the Rock that introduced the first Xbox console, and now gamers can have the moment captured on canvas. Many fans will likely consider this to be a much better ad than the one Walmart released with Xbox.
It’s certainly an odd way of doing a draw and a weird connection, only made slightly less odd by Johnson’s involvement. Considering the fact that Xbox Game Pass was originally envisioned as a rental service, this might not be the last time Xbox and Netflix have collaborated.
Anyway, it’s a bit of a shame that it’s the Netflix movie that Xbox chose to focus on collaboration. While Red Notice is by no means terrible, the general consensus is that this isn’t exactly the best time for any of its three tracks.
