Eye shadow denotes a shading complexity, expertise, and skill set that goes beyond normal humans. But I realized that if you change the language it’s a lot less intimidating. So just think about “eye color”. Right now, kaleidoscopic eye color is all the rage. However, as seen at Giorgio Armani AW21, it doesn’t need to be overdone. Take a slightly damp brush – it produces a washed out effect – and paint one color in the crevice, another on the top cover and finish with a tint along the bottom line. See, it’s just a little bit of color …

I can’t do without it … a gentle cleanser ideal for blemish-prone skin

Recently, I was reminded that making broad statements can leave you eating your words. Some people practically love to fountain essential oils, but I generally give them plenty of space and don’t recommend them. While I’m not an anti-fragrance per se, I had experiences years ago where my skin kept reacting horribly to any product loaded with essential oils. I have since written them off. But, unless you know you have an allergy, the truth is, it’s not all bad with essential oils. How a product is formulated, what percentage of oils is in the product, what other ingredients the product includes… all of these things make a difference. And this Caudalie cleanser proves it. I was first drawn to the line because it deals with blemish-prone skin – which I have. But it’s created for adults – which I am (mostly). And it includes exfoliating ingredients like salicylic acid – which I love. It wasn’t until a few days after trying (and loving) it that I realized it contained – shock horror – essential oils. Lavender, lemongrass, rosemary, geranium… But instead of being irritating, the cleanser brightened, smoothed and cleansed my skin. Which was a wonderful surprise. So I concede. Bad wording is the enemy. Essential oils are not. Caudalie Vinopure Purifying Cleansing Gel, £ 16, caudalie.com

On my radar… reef-friendly SPF, luxury washes and hair care

Encounters with the reefs Tons of sunscreen are deposited in the oceans each year, contributing to damage to corals. This hydrating SPF, however, is 100% safe for reefs. Grown Alchemist Natural Moisturizing Sunscreen SPF 30, £ 33, growalchemist.com

Pure pleasure There are the body washes, then there are the rosemary, spearmint and eucalyptus scented cleansers that make every shower an event. It is the latter. Neom Super Shower Power Body Wash, £ 26, neomorganics.com

Curl power Shampoo bars traditionally dehydrate curly hair. Not that. The inclusion of moisturizing avocado and kukui nut oils help this sulfate-free bar turn the tide. Only Curls Cleansing Shampoo Bar, £ 12, onlycurls.com
