Oil on canvas portrait of a young Martin Van Buren by Thomas Sully will be in Nye & Co.’s Jan ….

BLOOMFIELD, NJ – The two-day online auction of chic and antique estate treasures from Nye & Company Auctioneers, scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, January 19 and 20, at 10 a.m. EST on both days, will offer a wide variety of fine and decorative arts, with a focus on 17th to 20th century paintings, 18th to 21st century furniture, silverware and jewelry.

The auction will be featured by a property of a private collection in Southern New Jersey, the NAMITS Collection, owned by descendants of the Clinedinst family of New York and Philadelphia, property descended from the Fulton, Ludlow, Livingston and Phillips, owned by the Estate of John Strawbridge Lloyd of Philadelphia and, finally, a small selection of Rev War era properties approved for cession by the Fraunces Tavern Museum in New York.

One of the headliners of the auction is one of Martin Van Buren’s earliest known paintings, by Thomas Sully. Initialed and dated 1810, the painting belonged to the estate of John Strawbridge Lloyd. This first work by Sully depicts a young Van Buren in a striking mid-length pose. Documentation dates back to the early 1920s, when it was sent to the Pennsylvania Museum of Art.

Also, coming from the Clinedinst family of New York and Philadelphia, there is a portrait marked as Hannah Van Buren on the reverse side, but it is more likely a portrait of the late president’s daughter-in-law, Angelica Singleton. Van Buren, who assumed the role of “White House Hostess” during Martin’s presidency.

The fine arts category includes a bold but refined British school of the 16th and 17th centuries Portrait of a gentleman, the one that serves as a window into the life of the Elizabethan aristocracy. For those who love the great masters, there is a small selection of paintings from private collections. There are also a number of 19th-century American and European paintings from a private collection in southern New Jersey, directed by a Tonalist and Impressionist Landscape by Emile Gruppe (1896-1978). The painting perfectly captures the New England landscape.

Another interesting work is that of the Russian artist Mikhail Guermacheff (1867-1930). The autumnal landscape is a beautiful representation of the artist’s work. The representation of William Stanley Haseltine Bald Face Cliff in Ogunquit, Maine is perfect for anyone looking to take a piece of Vacationland home with them. There is also a signed George Inness painting of a Haystack in the moonlight.

For lovers of traditional furniture, the star of the auction is a George IV desk made by Morel & Seddon in 1828 for Windsor Castle. This very documented secretary was produced for room 231. The know-how is exceptional and clearly worthy of a king. There is also a large set of twelve well-proportioned and beautifully designed Regency dining chairs and a pair of oversized Regency sofas.

American furniture is also represented in the sale. It will be led by a fan-encrusted Federal chest of drawers, probably southern, and a Queen Anne tall chest of drawers, made in New England circa 1750. John Strawbridge Lloyd’s estate also contains a rich selection of antique American furniture, English Pitchers Toby, Chinese export and money.

After celebrating its 300th anniversary in 2019, the Fraunces Tavern Museum has decided to implement a reinterpretation of one of its rooms. Disposed items include a Federal-style mahogany sofa, a set of Regency dining chairs, two Federal-style gentleman’s dressing tables, and a Regency breakfast table. These items represent a perfect opportunity for patrons to help support the museum and its collection efforts.

For those who prefer more contemporary and designer furniture, there is a broken facade designed by Bunny Williams and additional items personally selected by Bunny Williams Interior Design for a prominent New York patron. A pair of Billy Baldwin chairs supplied to Mrs. William McCormick (Deeda) Blair by Billy Baldwin for his residence in Washington DC and a floor lamp attributed to Jacques Adnet complete a leather and carbon fiber lounge chair designed by Marcel Wanders for Louis Vuitton.

True to the line of being modern and contemporary, the sale presents a small selection of self-taught and raw art from the NAMITS collection. The group is led by a painting from the time of Purvis Young Goodbread Alley of two figures, dated 1976. Works by Jimmy Lee Sudduth and Sybil Gibson are also offered in the same collection.
